WARDOGS Factions: Three Teams, One Battlefield

WARDOGS pits 100 players across three factions — Lonestar, Valkyra and Manticore — in a three-team war for the Kolchia region and its rare resource PV-1.

Three Factions, 100 Players

WARDOGS is built around a three-team structure. Up to 100 players are split across three factions — Lonestar, Valkyra and Manticore — with roughly 33 players per team. All three converge on the same randomly generated 2×2 km Control Zone inside the 256 km² Kolchia map.

The three-team design is what separates WARDOGS from conventional two-team shooters. A team holding the Control Zone is often pressured from two fronts at once, and a team pushing in can be flanked by a third faction it was not focused on, producing the multi-directional warfare that defines the game.

Because the win condition is presence-based — the majority team inside the zone scores every 30 seconds, first to 100 wins — each faction is fundamentally competing for the same ground at the same time, which is what forces all three into the same 4 km² slice of the map.

Why Three Teams Instead of Two

A three-team structure changes the tactical loop. With two factions attacking a third, the defender is stretched thin; with one faction eliminated from the zone, the remaining two fight a more conventional head-to-head battle for the final points. This produces shifting alliances of convenience rather than stable fronts.

The three-way dynamic also discourages static camping. The threat can come from any of two other teams, so awareness, communication and repositioning are core skills. VOIP coordination and calling out enemy positions matter more than in a linear two-front shooter.

BULKHEAD and Team17 frame the three-team war as the heart of the game's identity, with the Control Zone being the mechanic that forces all three factions into the same contested ground match after match.

  • • 100 players split three ways, roughly 33 per faction
  • • All three converge on the same 2×2 km Control Zone
  • • Majority team in zone scores every 30 seconds
  • • First faction to 100 points wins the match
  • • Three-way pressure creates shifting, multi-front fights

The Conflict Over Kolchia and PV-1

The narrative reason all three factions are fighting is control of the fictional Kolchia region and the rare resource PV-1. CyberneticPunks describes PV-1 as the resource driving Eurasian conflict, giving the three-way war its backstory.

Lonestar, Valkyra and Manticore each have their own reason for wanting Kolchia, but in gameplay terms the objective is always the Control Zone. PV-1 is the lore that explains why three mercenary armies are converging on the same slice of Eastern European industrial land every match.

This keeps the faction conflict coherent: the same three armies fight over the same region across matches, with the Control Zone representing the currently contested slice of PV-1-bearing territory.

Do Factions Play Differently?

As of the verified pre-Early Access information, there is no evidence that the three factions have unique weapons, vehicles, abilities or balance differences. CyberneticPunks and GameWatcher both note that the official announcements have not described any mechanical differentiation between Lonestar, Valkyra and Manticore.

In practice this means a player's choice of faction is currently a thematic and visual one rather than a gameplay one. All three teams access the same weapon shop, the same cash economy and the same construction and destruction systems.

The Supporter Edition does include faction-themed weapon camos — a Valkyra A-91, a Lonestar Bushmaster and a Manticore KH-2002 — but these are cosmetic items, not mechanical faction perks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many factions are in WARDOGS?

There are three factions: Lonestar (blue), Valkyra (red) and Manticore (green). Up to 100 players are split across them, roughly 33 per team.

Do the WARDOGS factions have different weapons or abilities?

As of verified pre-Early Access information, no. The three factions share the same weapons, vehicles and mechanics. Faction choice is currently thematic and cosmetic, with faction-themed camos available in the Supporter Edition.

Can I switch factions during a match?

Yes, players can switch factions mid-match, with the caveat that a faction cannot be joined if it is already full. This allows teams to rebalance if one side is short-handed, but it does not enable stacking a faction beyond its player cap.

Why are the three factions fighting in WARDOGS?

The conflict is over control of the fictional Kolchia region and the rare resource PV-1, which is described as the resource driving Eurasian conflict. Each faction has its own reason for wanting the region.

How are 100 players split across three teams?

The 100 players are divided roughly evenly across the three factions, about 33 per team, and all three converge on the same Control Zone each match.
